Don't Reinstall Windows (Just yet)

In a recent article, Lifehacker tells us why "You Don't Need to Regularly Reinstall Windows".

The article says there is generally just 1 cause of slow down which leads to most Windows slowdowns. Too much Junk software.

Why is Junk Software so bad?

If not uninstalled and cleaned up, everything you install...
a) loads up your Hard Drive
b) can be loaded each time you run your computer and take up RAM and CPU cycles
c) continue to add to the Windows Registry -- an easy thing to overwhelm as time goes on anyway.

What to do? Well, the details are in the article. In summary they cover these ideas:

The BURRD is the WORD.

(B)e careful about leaving your hard drive with enough space to run smoothly (I'd suggest in the at least 10% free neighborhood)
(U)ninstall unused Apps
(R)esearch online before installing new software
(R)un CCleaner periodically to clean up your system
(D)ownload and Install Microsoft Security Essentials

Of course, BURRD is my own Acronym. Its a good one to remember.

A couple of their other suggestions, like installing a Virtual Machine or VM to test new software, or using Portable Apps instead of hosting them on your hard drive may not be as easy for most folks to accomplish, and if you're careful about what you install, and how much, these 2 items are not needed.
